Sapa may be a humble municipality within the province of Lao Cai, which is becoming famous to several travellers. What adds more character to Sapa are the ethnic minorities that live in and around the city. These tribal groups are H`mong, Dao, Tay, Giay, Muong, Thai, Hoa (Chinese), and Xa Pho (a sect of Phu La). Most of these people live in small villages scattered throughout the mountainous areas of the region. To earn a living, the old members of the group make and sell interesting souvenirs such as clothing and blankets.

Sapa is becoming the next big thing in the country. As a great place for trekking adventures, it is becoming more and more popular.
